On Tuesday 4th October, we went to the Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Competition at Blackburn Rugby Club. The Children trained very hard in the after school club prior to the competition and was confident of doing well in the tournament.
18 children were split into two teams. The A team (5 Boys + 4 Girls) was entered into the main competition, competing against 15 other primary schools which was split into three leagues, 5 schools in each league. To qualify out of the group stage, the winner of each group progressed and the best loser out of all three groups also went into the knockout stages. Team B (5 Boys + 4 Girls) was entered into a fun competition where they were up against 7 other teams.
First game for the A team saw us up against St James LD, with a positive start from Shadsworth, they went into a 2 goal lead, eventually finishing the game 4-3 to Shadsworth. With confidence high, we were up against the competition favourites, Redeemer. The game was eventful from the start and Shadsworth battled hard but came up short with a narrow 3-2 defeat. The next two fixtures were a must win if Shadsworth wanted to qualify and they didn’t disappoint. Third game against OLPS was a comfortable win, running out 4-2 winners. Our last game was nerve racking for both coaches and the players, but Shadsworth dominated the game against St Peters RC and won 2-1. With Shadsworth coming second in the group, it was down to see who was the best loser out of all three groups, and it was Shadsworth. Semi-final fixture saw Shadsworth up against our bitter rivals, Lower Darwen. It was a fantastic game to watch, both teams pushing for tries, it was Shadsworth who came out on top with a 2-0 victory, into the final we went!!! The final was between the mighty Shadsworth VS Redeemer, and we wanted to get some revenge from our earlier loss in the group stages. It was a spectacular game to watch, end to end attacking play. Unfortunately, Shadsworth hard work couldn’t win them the game, with Redeemer winning 4-3.
The children were brilliant throughout the tournament and were very unlucky not to be crowned champions. Very proud of both Shadsworth teams. WELL DONE!!!!
