Year 5 Anglo- Saxon Sculptures

The Year 5 children have been busy making sculptures inspired by an Anglo- Saxon village. We started the unit by discussing the difference between making a 'sculpture' and making a 'model' before completing a drawing exercise which enabled the children to tune into some of the key characteristics of Anglo- Saxon architecture. The children were then introduced to the materials and techniques available to them:

  • sticks and withies
  • small pieces of wood
  • wire of various thicknesses
  • corrugated cardboard
  • tissue paper
  • hessian
  • felted wool
  • glue guns/ PVA glue
  • clay
  • scissors

We then discussed and illustrated different ways of creating sculpture and armature as well as ways of fastening materials together. The children were then encouraged to create their sculpture through an exploratory approach. The children loved creating both the exterior and interior of their sculptures and were very proud of their final pieces. To finish with, the children were then asked to think of a single word which they felt summed up the personality of their sculpture.
