Year 3 Eating Seasonally
Year 3 have been busy learning all about seasonal fruits and vegetables. To begin with, we used an atlas to locate where different fruits and vegetables were grown around the world.
We then learnt about the bridge and claw techniques before having lots of fun practicing peeling, cutting and slicing different vegetables. We also learnt about the importance of peeling away from our bodies. Some of the vegetables were very small so we had to take extra care with those!
We then got to taste of the different foods available in our supermarkets during the winter months. We used our previous knowledge of where different fruits and vegetables are grown and discussed whether each one was grown in the UK or imported from a different country. After tasting each one, we had to describe the flavor using vocabulary such as bitter, sweet and sour.
For the final part of the topic, we rolled up our sleeves and made our very own apple tarts! From peeling and slicing the apples to measuring, mixing, and rolling out the pastry, we did it all from scratch. We learned important cooking skills, like using tools safely, following a recipe carefully, and working as a team.
The smell in the classroom was amazing—and the results were even better! Golden, flaky, and delicious, our tarts were a huge hit!
