History

INTENT

At Shadsworth Junior School, our History curriculum brings the past to life by enabling children to tell the story of Britain, from the Stone Age to the Viking era, as well as exploring ancient civilisations and significant events that shaped the world. Through these narratives, pupils develop a secure chronological understanding and an appreciation of how different periods connect and influence one another.

By studying topics such as Stone Age Britain, Roman Britain, Anglo-Saxon Britain, and Viking Britain, pupils explore the lives of people across centuries, uncovering themes of invasion, settlement, culture, and societal change. This exploration allows them to see how Britain’s history has been shaped by diverse influences and innovations.

Our curriculum also delves into local history, such as the Lancashire cotton mills, providing children with a tangible connection to the industrial heritage of their community and its role within national and global history. Alongside British history, pupils examine ancient civilisations like Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, gaining a global perspective on how early societies influenced the modern world.

History at Shadsworth Junior School encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and analytical skills. Pupils engage with a wide range of sources, evaluating evidence and constructing their interpretations of the past. These disciplinary skills are woven throughout our lessons, helping children understand cause and consequence, continuity and change, and significance in history.
