Geography
INTENT
At Shadsworth Junior School, we aim to encourage a lifelong fascination with the world and its people, empowering pupils to be resilient, informed, and active citizens in an ever-changing world.
We believe Geography inspires curiosity and provides answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Our curriculum encourages children to develop a greater understanding of the world and their place within it, fostering a sense of belonging, global responsibility, and an appreciation of diverse places, people, and environments.
Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Through our lessons, children explore the interplay between physical processes—such as rivers, mountains, and climate—and human geography topics like settlements, trade, and land use. This approach develops knowledge and skills that are transferable across other curriculum areas and promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development.
Our curriculum seeks to provide children with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes, exploring contexts ranging from local studies in the UK to global regions in Europe, North America, and South America. By examining environments such as the Amalfi Coast, Montserrat, and the Amazon Rainforest, pupils compare climates, cultures, and ecosystems, fostering a broader understanding of our interconnected world.
Through map work, atlases, digital tools, and fieldwork, children are equipped to analyse data, identify patterns, and evaluate changes in the environment. By exploring real-world issues like climate change, sustainability, and conservation, they are encouraged to reflect on their role in shaping a sustainable future.
