Remembrance Day 2024
To commemorate Remembrance Day this year, we wanted to create a memorable art installation. Something that would be meaningful, have an impact on the children and help them to understand the significance of the day. We decided to create our own visual army with every child and adult in school.
Each person was given a wooden dolly peg and asked to design their soldier to be part of the battalion. What would 237 soldiers look like displayed together? The children learnt about the British Armed Forces and looked at a range of uniforms from various army regiments, both past and present.
They then used their sketchbooks and began to plan how they would turn their wooden peg into a soldier. What materials would they need? How would they fix the materials to the peg?
Many children spent time adding finer details to their soldier. Wool was carefully wrapped around the peg to create the uniform and fixed into place with either PVA glue or a glue gun. Some created medals and backpacks and others wanted to add guns and grenades. The children were all very creative resulting in each soldier being completely different and unique!
