Year 5 Stuffed Toys
This half term the children have been busy making soft toys. We started the project by looking at a variety of soft toys and discussing similarities and differences as well as what we liked and disliked about each one. The children then practiced sewing using a running stitch and a blanket stitch. All of the children had a go at threading a needle and tying a knot, which took quite a lot of patience and perseverance!
The children were then given the design brief. They then had to plan their toy, thinking carefully about their target audience, the materials that they would use and any appendages and applique they wanted to include. All of the children came up with some very creative and imaginative ideas!
Then the real fun began! They used a cardboard template to carefully draw around and cut two identical pieces of felt for the body of their toy. They then added any appendages and applique before joining the two edges of the front and back together. Many of the children had never sewn before so opted to do a running stitch for this as they were more confident with using this stitch. Lastly, the children stuffed their toys and then closed the stuffing entrance. The children were all so proud of their end products and couldn't wait to show them off!
After constructing their stuffed toy, the children then created a process report to form an evaluation of the making process. We considered: materials and equipment used, the making process, knowledge learnt and skills practiced, progress and evaluation.
